The dragon-stemmed goblet is what many people picture when they think of Venetian style goblets. They were created almost purely to showcase the talent of the glassblower for executing difficult techniques. This particular goblet was created using 9 separate parts, not including all of the bits used to create the wings, face and tail of the dragon. From bottom to top, the parts are: pineapple-molded blown foot, merese, knopp, merese, wave-twisted merese, dragon stem, merese, avolio, and a pineapple-molded cup or bowl. It was created in four stages: first the blown, optic molded (ridged) knopp was made. A bubble was attached to the bottom of the knopp, opened, and its edge turned under to form the foot. It was broken off the pipe and kept warm in a small oven. Secondly, the cup and avolio were made, first by blowing a bubble into a pineapple mold to give ridges, then an avolio was added and the cup was opened on the pontil.  The cup, too, is kept warm in an oven while the dragon is sculpted.  In the third step, the dragon is sculpted and all the details added. In the final step, the wave merese is added to the dragon, then a plain merese, upon which the foot is picked up out of the oven. The piece is transferred to a pontil, a merese added to the top of the dragon, and the cup is picked up. It's quite an elaborate process. This goblet was created on March 12, 2024, and was #1 of the series of 13 goblets made in the spring of 2024. It measures 9 3/4" tall and 4 1/2" wide. It comes in a custom-made wooden box to help protect it when it is not in use or displayed.
