Eben loves to pull cane, and he's very good at it. We start by pulling filagrana, a type of cane made with color (in this case white) at its core, surrounded by clear glass. We pull it into a long (30'+) cane, which is cut into lengths about 7" long. In this piece, eight of these lengths of filigrana picked up on a large gather of clear glass. We then pull this mass of glass into another long cane as we twist it. This creates another long, more ornate cane that is then again cut into lengths of about 6". We lay these canes out side by side on a ceramic shelf and heat them so that they start to fuse together. Then we roll a collar of clear glass over the long side and pick up the canes into a cylinder. Eben pinches off the end of the cylinder and then shapes the resulting bubble into the cup you see here. This cup is attached to a blown stem by an avolio. The stem is fitted to the foot using a merese. This goblet also features a traditional blown foot with a turned under edge, which makes an otherwise thin, delicate foot stronger. This labor-intensive goblet was created over several days and finished on May 14, 2024. It measures 6 3/4" tall and 5" wide. It comes in a custom-made wooden box to help protect it when it is not in use or displayed.
